Easy Makeovers for Your Dull Bedroom

When it comes to decorating, it’s not uncommon for people to leave the bedroom for last since no one else really sees it. It’s hard to know what to do with that dull and boring bedroom when you don’t have a lot of time or money left for decorating. Here are some simple and inexpensive ways to spruce up that dull bedroom.

Paint the Walls
The easiest way by far to spruce up a boring bedroom is to paint the walls. Nothing adds style and color to a room more quickly than adding a coat of paint or two to the walls. Although it’s important to choose a color you like, it’s also important that it adds some interest to the room. Be sure the paint color accents or matches the accessories you have in the room, as that will make the décor look more cohesive.

Add an Interesting or Colorful Bed Set
Since the bed tends to be the largest item in the bedroom, it usually serves as a focal point for the space. Therefore, by adding color to the oak bed, you can instantly add interest to the room. You want a bed set that’s interestingly patterned or colorful but also coordinates with the other items in the room. Add a few decorative pillows to the new comforter or bedspread. If you’d prefer to stay away from a patterned bed set, then get a set that’s a single color and add accent pillows in a contrasting color to add interest to the area.

Hang Photographs on the Walls
If part of what is keeping your bedroom dull is empty walls, then you need to hang up some items to add some style and pizzazz to the décor. An easy way to cover your walls is to hang up framed photographs of you and your family. You might also consider hanging photographs of nature scenes such as ocean shots or pictures of flowers. Or if you like, go with some old black-and-white photographs.

Perhaps photographs just aren’t your thing or you’re looking for something a little different. Then consider hanging a large piece of artwork that’s caught your eye. You might even make the artwork yourself, if you’re feeling creative. If you like, you can base your entire bedroom scheme off that one piece of art. This approach to decorating can be very inspiring when it comes to design.

Add a New Piece of Furniture
If you have the space, consider adding a new piece of furniture to your bedroom to make things more interesting. Replace your old or out-of-style furniture with new pieces, as this will lend more style to the room as well. You might get a new oak dresser, a chest or bench for the end of the bed, or a new bed if you can afford it.

You want your bedroom to be a place where you can relax and enjoy hanging out. If your bedroom is dull and boring, that can certainly be a drag. So follow these simple ideas to create a stylish and interesting retreat in no time at all.

5 Great Colors to Use in Your Home

A common problem faced by homeowners when decorating a room is figuring out what colors to use for the décor. As a simple visit to your local paint store will reveal, there are literally hundreds of different colors and shades from which to design your color scheme. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by so many choices. Not everyone has an eye for color, and it can be quite difficult to pick out which colors will look good together in a room. If you’re searching for ideas for color combinations for your décor, here are five you can consider.

1. Brown, Blue, and Cream
This is a great color scheme for practically any room in your home. Just be sure that when you use brown, blue, and cream, that you keep a balance of color—especially when you’re applying the dark brown. For instance, you might want to use cream or light blue pillows to lighten up a dark brown couch. Or if your couch is cream colored, you can add some interest with brown and blue pillows. To add even more visual interest, look for patterns that contain all three colors.

2. Shades of Brown and Cream
Whether you’re looking to create a peaceful retreat in your bedroom or bathroom, try using shades of brown and cream. There’s a wide variety of shades across this spectrum that you can choose from, anything from dark chocolate brown to an off white or light cream color. You can add interest to the monochromatic look of this color scheme by pairing lighter and darker shades, which will result in the room appearing livelier.

3. Blue and Orange
Blue and orange lie across from each other on the color wheel, which means they are considered complementary colors. If you decide to go with this color scheme, it’s important to keep the colors muted rather than using bright oranges and blues. This is a great color combination to use for a contemporary-styled room; just add white or even brown to the mix.

4. Black and White
Black and white is a classic color combination and makes a great color scheme for practically any room in your home. The great thing about black and white is that it can be used in a variety of ways. Depending on the pieces you use, it can be modern as well as traditional. Add an accent color into the scheme, such as green or red, to create even more style in a black and white room. There’s no shortage of black-and-white décor items available these days, making this one of the easiest color schemes to work with.

5. Pink and Green
Another complementary color scheme you might try is pink and green, which tends to go well in bedrooms, living rooms, and sun rooms. Add a neutral color into the pink and green mix, or you may end up with too much color in the room. Be sure to keep the colors the same shade. Mint green and neon pink, for instance, aren’t going to work well together.

If you’re having a hard time coming up with color combinations for your home, then this is a good place to start. Any of these combinations should give you some inspiration when decorating your home. When you use any of these suggestions as a base and then add your own style to them, you can create a unique look for your home.

How to Decorate Your Kid’s Bathroom

It can be easy to get carried away when decorating your child’s bathroom. But you do need to be sure that the room is functional as well as fun. You don’t need to undertake a big remodeling project to create a perfect bathroom for a kid. Sometimes all you need is a great decorating plan that makes sense. Here are some great decorating tips for a kid’s bathroom to keep in mind.

Get Your Kid Involved in the Decorating
When you give a child a say in decorating a room, he or she is much more likely to use that room and keep it clean. If your child is old enough, consider his or her opinion when it comes to choosing colors and an overall decorating scheme for the bathroom. See if your child would be interested in helping you paint or making art projects to hang on the walls. They will be much more enthusiastic about the bathroom if they are involved in any aspect of the decorating.

Always Remember Safety First When Decorating
You want to keep your kids’ safety in mind at all times when decorating the bathroom. After all, it’s really easy to get caught up in the project, only to later realize that something you did is a safety hazard. This is particularly important for younger kids and toddlers. If there are younger children in the home, remember to add things like a non-slip tub mat and safety latch for the toilet. You might also want to keep medications out of the reach of little hands by adding safety locks to the cabinets.

Be Sure to Add Plenty of Storage and Organization Space
You need to create a designated place for everything in your child’s bathroom if you want that bathroom to stay clean. Your child will be much more likely to clean up if you provide him or her with plenty of storage and organizational space. You can keep cabinets and drawers organized by providing smaller bins and baskets to keep small items in place. Remember, your storage and organization spaces can be decorative ones as well.

Add Style or a Theme with Small Touches
Kids grow up so fast. It’s therefore often smarter to decorate the room in a neutral manner, keeping the walls and flooring plain. You can then add stylish flair to the room with smaller décor items. Then these smaller items, such as wallpaper borders and shower curtains, can easily be changed in the future. You might add style with other décor items such as towels, baskets, and artwork.

Get Creative with the Decorating
Remember that this is a kid’s bathroom—not your dining room or living room. So try and get creative and even a little crazy with the décor. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone when decorating this room. This is one room that doesn’t need to match the style of the rest of the home, especially if only you and your kids are going to go in there.

Decorating a kid’s bathroom is a great project for both parents and their kids. Keep these tips in mind, and you will be well on your way to a great kid’s bathroom.

DIY Decorating Projects for Your Home

Do you like to do your own decorating projects yourself? By doing your own projects, you ensure that your own style and personality will come through your home’s décor. Try any of these 5 great DIY decorating projects for the home.
1. Paint the Walls
The easiest yet most effective way to give room a whole new look is by painting. The décor of the room will always be influenced by the color of the walls. If you decide to paint the walls, be sure that you do it properly and prepare the walls as needed. You may need to fill in any cracks and then sand them down, as you want the wall to be crack-free and smooth. You will need to first put on a coat of primer, and depending on the color and the saturation of the wall, you may have to put on a few coats of paint.

2. Install Molding on the Walls
A great way to add a new touch to the walls is with molding. If your wall is boring, molding will give it some interest and appeal. You might install a chair rail in the middle of the wall or go with crown molding, which is installed at the top. The molding should be painted or stained first, before you nail it to the wall. Then you can go back and touch up the nail holes later.

3. Personalize the Lampshades
Are you having trouble finding the exact kind of lampshade you want? Or do you just want something that shows your style? Consider designing your own lampshade. This is easier than it sounds. Simply take a white or cream-colored lampshade and cut figures or designs out of a dark paper such as black or red. Then tape the paper to the inside of the lampshade and you will have created a designer lampshade that reflects your own personal style. Add items to your lampshade such as embellishments and ribbon to personalize it as well. This is wonderful way to add a touch of flair to oak end tables in your bedroom.

4. Make Your Own Artwork for the Walls
You might not be able to draw or paint very well, but that doesn’t mean you can’t come up with your very own artwork for the walls or to place on a wood bookcase. You just need to get creative. You can look around and use items you already have. Look around for photographs, postcards, and book images that you can hang on the wall. Another easy idea is to put together a collage of items found in nature. Another simple project is to take a frame or blank canvas and wrap it in a patterned fabric that fits in with the room’s décor. If you choose two or three different patterns and different sized frames, you can hang them together in a cluster on the wall.

5. Make Your Own Window Treatments
If you aren’t handy with a sewing machine or a needle and thread, there are many different non-sewing techniques you can use to make your own curtains. For instance, you can take a long silk scarf and drape it over a window curtain, which will create instant interest around the window. You might also consider using such things as placemats and tablecloths to create instant window treatments. If you do sew, then find a pattern you like, pick out the fabric, and create the window treatments you’ve always envisioned for your home.

Great DIY decorating projects don’t have to be difficult. These are only 5 of the many different types of projects you can take on so you can decorate your home in your own personal style.

5 Tips for Making Decorating Stress Free Bedroom

Most people want their bedroom to be a relaxing retreat from the craziness of the world, but many time it doesn’t end up that way. Sometimes trouble relaxing and sleeping at night can be traced to the way the bedroom is decorated and organized. Following are some tips to keep in mind when trying to create a peaceful and relaxing environment in your bedroom.

Get Rid of the Television
The television is the number-one distraction that prevents people from falling asleep at night or being able to de-stress in their bedroom. Televisions definitely do not belong in the bedroom. Some people do swear by falling asleep to the television at night, but the general consensus is that having the television on before you go to sleep does more harm than good. Thus, keep the television out of your bedroom’s design, because you definitely don’t need it.

Choose Relaxing Colors for the Walls
Another common distraction in the bedroom is colors that are either too dark or too bold. For a relaxing and peaceful environment, you need to start with by putting colors on the walls that are also relaxing and peaceful. Stick with neutral or pastel colors in your décor. Colors such as tan, cream, light pink, and light yellow work great in a bedroom. You want to avoid harsh colors such as red, black, and dark green, as they can actually affect your mood in a negative way.

Get a Comfortable Bed and Mattress
When it comes to your oak beds, you should always choose comfort over your wood bedroom furniture design or style. It’s not easy to fall asleep at night if your bed and mattress are uncomfortable. If you have a certain vision for your bedroom and no other bed will do, then be sure to compensate for any awkwardness by buying the most comfortable mattress you can find.

Include a Water Feature in the Bedroom
A water feature in your bedroom (such as a small fountain) may be just the thing you need to be able to relax at night. Many people really enjoy falling asleep at night to the soft trickle of water. It can help you fall asleep quicker as it calms and clears your mind. Do be sure, however, that the sound of water is soothing and not annoying to you before placing a water feature in your bedroom.

Buy the Proper Window Treatments to Block Out the Light
In the bedroom, window treatments have double duty. They need to be functional, as well as adding some character and style to the décor of the room. Your bedroom’s window treatments should be able to block out the light. That way, you’re not having to wake up at 5:00 a.m. with the sun. You can also choose to dress the window with a great curtain or valance and then add a pair of functional blinds.

Before you start to decorate your bedroom, consider what items most help you to relax. After all, these are the items you’re going to want to incorporate into the style of the room. No matter how perfectly a décor item fits with the theme of the bedroom, that doesn’t necessarily mean it belongs there.

How to Display Framed Art in Your Home

If you have a favorite piece of art but are unsure as to how to display it, there are a couple of different options to choose from. You can easily go beyond simply hanging the piece of artwork on the wall. Choose from one of these creative ways to display your art instead.

Use Ribbon to Hang Art on the Wall
Rather than simply putting a nail in the wall, use ribbon to hang the art from the wall instead. Carefully choose your ribbon so that it adds to the art and complements it well. Hang ribbon either from a hook or screw in the middle of the back of the art piece or from both sides. Then hang it from the wall, using a hook or a small nail. Look to make sure that the artwork is hanging evenly, especially if you are using more than one ribbon to hang i t by.

Place Artwork on a Decorative Shelf
A great place to display art is on a decorative shelf. No matter what style of art you are looking to display, there are all types of decorative shelves and ledges that will add to the beauty of the piece.

You want to be sure that the shelf you choose is the appropriate size for the piece you are going to display. You might also decide to display an entire collection of art on the shelf, rather than just one piece. Always ensure that you’ve properly installed the shelf or ledge on the wall before you place any artwork on it.

Use a Fireplace Mantel to Display Art
Do you have a nice fireplace mantel in your home? Why not draw even more attention to your mantel by placing a piece of artwork on it? Rather than going the traditional route of hanging the artwork above the mantel, try placing the piece on the mantel and up against the wall instead.

You want the art piece to be smaller than the mantel, but you don’t want it so small that you can’t really see it. If the artwork is small, try placing two or three smaller pieces on the mantel for a unique look, rather than just the one. Make sure that the piece of art is secure. After all, you don’t want it falling down off the mantel.

Find Unique Hangers for the Art
There are many different things you can use to hang artwork that you probably haven’t even thought of. Your favorite stocking holder makes a great hanger. Simply nail it to the wall and use it to hold your favorite piece of art.

A rope or chain that hangs from the ceiling or the top of the wall makes another unique artwork holder. Hang one piece or several pieces from it, either vertically or horizontally, depending on the length of the wall. You can actually create something like a clothesline, hanging your pieces of art across a blank wall.

Don’t settle for the same old ways of hanging or displaying art in your home. There are plenty of creative and crafty ways to display art in a room, no matter your style or theme. With a little creativity, you can use one of these ideas for displaying art in your home in a unique way.

How to Buy Bedding Sets

Believe it or not, when it comes to choosing bedding, there are literally hundreds of different options available. It’s important to put some time and effort into buying the best bedding set you can, as it will play a significant role in your décor. Before you buy your next bedding set, here are some things you need to remember.

Determine the Color and Style
Unless you are decorating your bedroom around a bedding set that already jumped out at you, you first need to determine what color and style you are looking for. This typically depends on what style and colors you have chosen for your bedroom. For instance, even if you’ve fallen in love with that zebra-print bedding, it’s still not going to fit in with the beach-themed décor you’ve already planned for your bedroom.

Other people will decide to shop for a bedding set first. Then they will base the décor of their bedroom off that. Still, it’s always better to have some sort of an idea of what you want in the bedroom, rather than aimlessly shopping.

Set a Budget
Having a wide variety of bedding sets to choose from means that you’ll be faced with a wide variety of price points as well. A very inexpensive bedding set will go for 50 dollars, whereas a luxury bedding set will go for 2,000 dollars. Thus, it’s important to decide how much of your decorating budget you want to spend on your bedding set.

If your project includes decorating the whole bedroom, you need to be sure to set money aside for other items you might need. You might also want to keep in mind that not every bedding set will contain everything you need. So you might also end up having to buy extra sheets and pillows for the set as well.

Know the Size of the Bed
You should know what size bed you have and even take the measurements of the mattress before you even start looking at bedding. If you don’t know the size of your bed, you might end up going back to the store and returning items. When you go to measure the mattress, just be sure to measure its length, depth, and width, especially if your mattress is a pillow top.

Research Bedding Materials
Different bedding sets are made of one of several different materials. The type of material you choose will determine the price, so you’ll need to decide on a material that’s going to fit in your budget. You need to also look at thread count for the sheets. When the thread count is higher, the sheets will be more luxurious and also more expensive.

Cotton tends to be the most popular bedding material. There are a few different types of cotton you can choose from. At the more expensive end is Egyptian cotton, which is also very luxurious. The most common and least expensive material that is sold for bedding is standard cotton. Other materials you might choose from include silk, flannel, and chenille.

A bedding set can easily add to or take away from the décor in your bedroom. Avoid ending up with bedding that’s a mistake—plan accordingly before purchasing the right bedding set for your bedroom.

Easy Tips for Decorating Your Dining Room on a Budget

Decorating your oak dining table is much simpler than it might seem. Some people do spend thousands of dollars just on decorating the dining room table. But it may not even take a hundred dollars to get that beautifully decorated dining room table you’ve always dreamed of. By making careful use of things you already have and throwing a little creativity into the mix, you can create a great-looking dining room table that fits within your budget.

Keep Placemats or a Tablecloth on the Table
Adding placemats or a tablecloth is one of the easiest ways to add instant style to your oak dining sets. While some tablecloths and placemats are rather expensive, there are more inexpensive options at department or discount stores. If you know how to sew and have a machine, then buy some inexpensive fabric and make your own.

Whatever fabric you choose is going to set the style for your dining room table. If you want a clean and simple look, use plain-colored fabric. A patterned design might work well if you plan on only putting placemats or the tablecloth on the table.

Utilize the China You Already Have
Rather than simply storing your good china away in a kitchen cabinet or hutch, consider displaying it on your dining room table. This is a great way to add some interest to the table. It’s okay if you never use that china, as you are only displaying it for décor reasons and not for actual use. If you already have a good set of china, this can also be a money saver, as you don’t have to pay additional money for a new setting to display.

Look to Nature for Décor Pieces
Nature provides us with so many different decorating options that don’t cost a thing. When you spend time outdoors, you are surrounded by inspiration for some really beautiful and unique dining room table centerpiece ideas.

· Creating a pretty centerpiece can be as simple as a vase of freshly picked flowers—and they smell nice too.

· A bowl filled with pinecones and dried flowers can really get your dining table ready for the fall season.

· If you have an apple tree or know someone who does, you can place some apples in a bowl for a centerpiece.

· You can also use fruits such as lemons and limes.

· Try placing a simple potted plant on the table for a clean, fresh look.

Use Candles to Decorate Your Dining Room Table
Not only do candles on your dining room table add a romantic ambience to the room, but they will also add some great interest and style to the table. You can create an instant centerpiece by placing some inexpensive candles in a row or a circle in the center of the table. You might also consider a candelabra for the centerpiece. For another centerpiece idea, add a glass bowl filled with water to the table and fill it with floating candles. With so many different candle options available, you should be able to find the perfect thing that fits your own unique decorating style.

Decorating your dining room table doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. With any of these great dining room table decorating ideas, you can stick to your budget while creating a stylish and unique table for your home.

Decorating a Home Office on a Budget

Traditional OfficeTelecommuting, or working from home, is becoming increasingly popular with professionals. You’ll need some sort of home office space if you either work from home or end up taking a lot of your work home with you. Fortunately, setting up a home office doesn’t have to be expensive. Maybe you work from home, or perhaps you just want to add a home office for the family. Either way, there a plenty of ways to build a budget-friendly office space that will fit your needs and the needs of your family.

Sectioning a Portion of a Room for Office Space
People often have the misconception that a home office needs to be a completely separate room. Although having your own room can be very nice, it isn’t necessary at all. Unless your business needs a lot of storage space, a home office can be set up in a closet or in a corner of another room, such as the dining room or kitchen. As a matter of fact, a corner of a room or a closet can sometimes work better for work-at-home parents, particularly if they need to keep an eye on younger children or monitor their teens’ computer time.

Converting a Closet into a Home Office
If you want to make a closet into a home office, start by taking the doors off and removing the closet bar. Then place a simple oak desk in the closet with a comfortable chair. The back walls of the closet can provide a place for shelving or any other organizational or storage options you might need. To keep your office private, simply hang a long curtain over the front of the closet. All in all, this is a very inexpensive option for a home office that doesn’t require a lot of space.

Adding Shelving and a Desk to Any Room
A home office can be as simple as a built-in wood bookshelf or storage area, or perhaps a computer armoire. In this way, you can create a very inexpensive home office that can be added to just about any room, from the dining room to the kitchen to the bedroom.

For those of you who are lucky enough to have a separate room for your home office, you can still create a budget-friendly space. There are many simple things you can do that will make a big difference, such as painting the room your favorite color or a mellow color like light green or blue.

To decorate the walls, try adding some framed photographs. See if you can find some nature photos, or add pictures of your family, if you wish. Another option is to add some shelves or shadow boxes to the walls for storage, as they can double as decorative items as well.

Those books that you use for your business might also serve as decorative items, particularly if they are nice-looking. You might be able to find decorative boxes and trinkets that can be filled with office supplies, so that they are functional as well as stylish.

For those of you with new businesses and limited resources, just start by building your home office up slowly. In the beginning, all you really need is a desk and a chair. As your budget grows, you can look to find deals or sales on decorative and storage items to use in the room. After all, there isn’t any reason to go into debt creating a home office space before your business is even making money.
