Do you like decorating with candles in your home? Almost any room in the house or an apartment can accommodate candle use, as long as you set it up safely and don’t leave candles unsupervised. Although you may think of candles primarily as table ornaments or birthday decorator items for a cake, there are many uses to which you can put candles, and their accessories, to make your home more warm and inviting.

Consider adding wall sconces along your central staircase. Use the electric kind to prevent fire hazards. These candles may run from batteries in their base or by electric plug-in cords. Wall candles add a lovely, romantic feel to a stairwell, creating a sense of intimacy and perhaps an old fashion look to blend with your decorating style. Wall sconces work well outside oft-used rooms, like the bathroom, as well as home offices, dens, and family rooms. You can get faux candles for your sconces just to be sure no one accidentally lights them to create a potential fire hazard.

Votive candles add a decorative touch around the holidays, especially. Set out a candle ring of plastic, vinyl, or fabric flora, taking care that it is fireproof before lighting the candle at its center. Smaller candles can be placed around the main one as accents in color-coded arrangements that emphasize certain holiday or pastel shadings for purposeful design. Votive candles may be white, but then are placed inside colored glass holders. These make great Advent or Easter centerpieces, as well as table decorations for religious celebrations like First Communion, baptism, or church membership.

Large, round candles help to create attractive centerpieces for holiday themes, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or even Memorial Day. Trim the candle base with related decorator craft items, albeit it fabric, flowers, or a basket, and add whatever else helps to make the candle fit the occasion.

Special dinner celebrations can be commemorated with candle centerpieces or candelabra in the center of the table or on a side area, like a buffet. The candelabra may represent spiritual significance for events like Passover or Christmas, or they can simply add a romantic touch to the evening. Use a flame quencher to put out each candle when you are ready to extinguish them.

Candles do not need to be lit to become part of an attractive centerpiece or decorator item. For example, you can attach a candle to the center of a wreath without lighting it. Candles at either end of your fireplace mantel make a nice touch, as do a cluster of varied size candles in the hearth when your fireplace is not in use.

Use candles to add intimacy, romance, or mysticism to your next gathering for guests or just for your family. Few decorating objects add so much ambiance as a candle, especially one that is scented. Small and tall, or large and wide, candles that are wisely used can bring any room to life.

A totally new look for your bedroom doesn’t A little creativity can go a long way, whether it’s an afternoon project or just adding a few accessories.

Here’s what you need to get things going:

Go out and get a few pillows in a totally new color. These can be as inexpensive as $10 each. Take pillows of similar color, mix up the textures – like silk and chenille – and you’ve instantly go yourself a sophisticated monochromatic look. Looking to create a romantic mood? Then simply create a cascading layer of pillows with large ones in the back and the smaller ones front and center.

Want to make a big impact? Then a fresh coat of paint is one the most inexpensive way to go. Remember, you don’t have to repaint your entire room; you can focus on a particular area that needs renovating. Older closet doors, the ones that usually have more detail can easily be improved and given texture by painting the frame in natural color and the inset in a darker color. Painting furniture is also a great way to give the room new life. Try sponge-painting a chest or giving a cabinet a faux antique finish.

A new headboard can be rather expensive. Try something different and wild like using a wrought iron or picket fence bought at a flea market. Bed skirts are a great way to make your bed look soft and sophisticated. They come in a variety of patterns, colors and textures. For versatility and natural beauty try a soft and neutral color. You don’t want it to pull too much focus instead you want it to be the finishing touch on your bed.

Window treatments are not as difficult as most people believe. Using swag curtains at the top of your window can be inexpensive – depending on the fabric you use – yet elegantly and subdued. It’s an easy way to add a touch of femininity. You can do this by simply placing plant or bicycle hooks in the ceiling. You can also go with a simple garland accent and blinds for your window. We also adore the simple look of pre-made drapes and a basic rod with funky finials. Pottery Barn, JCPenny, Target and Bed Bath and Beyond offer a wide selection of all these items.

Do you have a four-poster or canopy bed that needs a little life? Drape fabric over the poles and let a little of the fabric fall to floor to achieve that beautiful “puddle” effect. All you need to do is add an extra 20 – 24 inches to the fabric before cutting.

Candles are a perfect decorative item that many people tend to forget. While most people go with white candles, since they’re the most sophisticated, consider clustering colored candles to create a focal point on a night stand or dresser. Remember the rule of three – group your candles in odd numbers – even amounts tend to be a bit boring. Try using a variety of different candle heights and gather them on a wall shelf.

A quick way to give a room a new look is to hang framed artwork or mirrors, just make sure they work with your existing décor. Stick with neutral-colored frames — gold, silver, white, black or wood tone. Add shelves for another quick decorating spruce-up. Wall shelves are great for your collection, but keep the small stuff away. Loading shelves with a lot of tiny knick-knacks will make your shelf appear too busy. You can place a framed painting or pictures on the shelf or even try something minimalist like fresh flowers in simple glass bottles.
