The prospect of decorating your home can be a daunting one. Harry Bertoia invented the bertoia chair, and he was one of the most legendary bertoia stool designers of the mid-century period. Bertoia was fond of metalwork, and created his signature chair, then called the “Diamond chair”, in the 1950’s.   Of this chair he said, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.” The chair’s look is achieved with molded lattice work of welded steel, part of a five piece collection from the Knoll company.

Bertoia was, in addition to being a furniture designer, but also a university lecturer and a sculptor.   This unique combination of talents probably had a big influence on his design thinking.  The integration of knowledge and design makes for stunning results.  By thinking creatively about the medium in which he was most comfortable – metal – Bertoia was able to completely re-imagine the concept of chairs, and revolutionize modern furniture.

The bertoia chair is a signature aspect of today’s modern furniture. Bertoia’s experimentation with the bending of metal rods produced a chair that also functioned as a piece of practical art. The modern furniture is simply another aspect of the beautiful design collection. The design is “classically modern” in that it appears perpetually modern, though originally conceived almost 60 years ago.   It is a fixture of mid-century design that remains popular to this day.

Modern furniture design is generally thougt of as clean, sophisticated, and simple. Perhaps you should consider starting with one room, to keep the budget reasonable.
