]]>The primary entrance to your house is called the “mouth of chi” in feng shui. It is an extremely important area to focus on because so much of the energy that comes into your house comes through this primary entrance. A few small changes here can make a big difference in the rest of your house. Here are a few ways to make the most of what’s good about your front entrance and how to overcome any existing problems.
1) Use your front door
So many people come through the garage now that it is quite common that no one has even stepped over the real threshold to your house in the last few days. Make a point of changing that by walking out your front door to get the mail, or just to look around your front garden.
2) Make sure the lock works well and the door opens easily
Blocked entrances are very bad in feng shui, and the front door is the most important entrance. If your door leaks heat, get it sealed. If it sticks, either oil the hinges or get a locksmith to fix where it is stuck. Absolutely make sure that the door can swing open all the way inside, with no coat hangers or anything else behind it.
3) Widen the path
The wider the path to your door (and the wider your door, too) the more energy and, symbolically, the more money can come into your house. Ever notice how big, expensive houses tend to have double doors and wide paths? Make your house like that, even if it just means adding a row of paving stones on either side of the front path.
Having steps in front of your house can be good, bad, or not matter too much. Having steps going up to your house can slow chi down, whereas steps going down to your front door (like a basement apartment), can slow it down so much as to create stagnation. So long as there are just a few steps, and they seem in proportion to the rest of the entrance, they will not affect too much. But if someone has to climb lots of steep stairs to come to a little door, then you need to take some steps of your own to increase the flow of chi so it can overcome that barrier.
4) Consider the direction
The direction your front door faces is very important in feng shui. Most directions are positive, but doors facing North and particularly North-East are not auspicious. If your door faces either of these directions, you want to insulate the inside of your house from this energy. You can do that by having a winding path to the front door and adding bushy evergreen plants so the energy has to meander in. Painting your door with high-gloss paint will also reflect back some of the negative chi, as will using shiny metal fittings on the door. Other ways to block this energy include putting a reflecting globe or a convex near the front door.
Front doors facing East are excellent for building up a career or getting started in life. A South-East facing door helps with communication and steady progress. The South is a high-energy direction that may even need to be toned down with a dish of sea salt if you find yourself arguing with people. A South-West door gives more settled feel, but there is a risk of some not-so-good energy settling in, too. A Westward facing door will help with romance and contentment. A North-West facing door is good for authority and stability.
5) Consider the activity beyond your door
What’s going on just beyond your property line will also determine whether you want to block or increase the energetic openness of the front door. If your house is at the end of a street, or in the direct line of a traffic flow, you want to put up some blocks to slow the speeding chi down. But if you are on the inside curve of a quiet street, you want to bring the energy in and activate it, possibly with a water fountain or wind chimes.

]]>As a DIY person with passion specifically for woodworking, I’ve always wanted to build a dining room table. It wasn’t until I had the weekend free that I got started building a dining table. And was I glad that I find the time to build. It was one of the woodworking project that I’m really proud of.
To build a table for a dining area is a matter of setting the style for the whole dining area. The dining room table would serve as the focal point of the whole setting, thus it is imperative that the dining table is well built and of good quality.
In building a dining room table, I have to consider some things like:
MATERIALS
Most common materials used for a dining table legs are wood and metal. While wood, glass and granite are also commonly used for tabletops. I personally prefer using wood as it compliments with my dining area and I’ve had more experience working with wood.
SIZE
Another consideration is the size as well as the shape of the dining table. The more common shape of a dining table is circle and rectangle. These are very safe choices though you also cannot go wrong with an oval shape.
As for the size, you would want the dimension of the table to be just about right with the space available in the dining room. It must also allow some space in the dining room for people to move about.
Another thing is the proportion of the different parts of the table. The table top must be proportionate to the legs, to the apron as well as the whole structure itself. It must come off well put together.
FINISHES
There’s no one standard finishing to a wooden dining table. It all comes down to personal preference. The safest suggestion I can give is to use the same kind of stain that you used on other furnishing in the house. This way, all furniture will come together in a blend of style. But if you are to make table more durable, you may consider using multiple levels of clear coats.
DESIGN
Dining room table comes in various shapes and design. Some tables come with the table legs straight, tapered or curved. There are also many variation to the tabletop as well.
To build a dining room table, I strongly suggest you work with a dining table plan. This way, you have a clear idea on the design, materials and you also have a step-by-step instruction on how to go about building a dining room table.

MEASUREMENT
You have to decide on the exact measurement of the table you have in mind. How big and how high do you want your table? One of the best thing in building your own table is that you can easily customize it to suit the look and size of your living room.
TOOLS
You’ll hardly need power tools to build your own table. You’ll only be needing some basic hand tools which you probably have already in your house. I remember using a drill but you can just as easily use a screwdriver with bit instead.
MATERIALS
Choosing the materials to use in building a coffee table is your personal choice. Some would like glass for their table top while others, me included, likes to use wood for their coffee table.
If you are going to choose wood, you have to decide beforehand if you are going to use some finishing or paint. Some wood look best as it it while some wood needs to be painted or have applied finishing.
TABLE DESIGN
You can easily customize your table design but for basic table plan, I still rely on a good and easy to follow instruction to build a coffee table. This way, I don’t overlook some things right into the building process.

]]>Before you decide you want to paint the outside of your house, you and the family will need to decide on what color of paint you will be using to paint your house. You could go to your local hardware store, and ask a customer service provider what type of paint would last a long time.
You will want to sand everything down before hand. This way you will be sure that there are no nails or screws sticking out on the walls, and you have a smooth surface to paint. After, you have walked the house over completely and sanded down all the walls, you may begin painting.
After, you pour paint in your paint pan, be sure to put the lid back on your bucket of paint each time. The reason you should do this, is that if you leave the lid off your paint bucket, your paint may dry up, or become hard. Then in turn, you will have to trash an entire can of paint.
Many painters will use a roller when painting a large area, then touches up with a brush. When using a roller to paint with you are going to start from the bottom of your wall. However, do not go all the way down because you will paint the ground or the linerboards at the bottom of the house. You may choose to paint these a different color, or paint them the same color as the house.
However, if you paint them a different color the other color of the house will stand out better. In addition, if your neighbors get a look at your house you maybe able to make some extra money by painting their house. Start from the bottom and go straight up, also do not go all the way up the wall unless you are going to be painting the entire house the same color.
After you go up with the roller, come back down in the same fashion this strengthens the layers of paint that you put on the house. In addition, many painters will put two coats of paint on a wall when painting. Continue with the roller until you have put two coats of paint on the first wall.
Then come back with your paintbrush and touch up some of the areas you missed or could not get to with the roller. Do this around the entire house; you want to do each wall this way to be sure you have a good solid coat of paint all the way around your house.
