Outdoor Sauna – Things To Consider Before You Shop For Yours

If you want to set up an outdoor sauna, there are some things you’ll need to consider before you start shopping.

You can purchase an outdoor sauna kit that will be constructed to withstand various weather elements.

Don’t even think about placing a sauna outdoors before checking local building codes first. You might need to obtain a permit.

Now, here are some of the questions you should answer before you buy an outdoor sauna…

What style do you prefer?

There are many different designs and styles that you have to choose from…

For example, do you want a cabin look? Or maybe a barrel-shaped sauna?

Do you prefer a contemporary style?

How big do you need your sauna to be?

Will guests use the sauna or just members in the household?

Do you want additional space for a shower and/or changing area?

You can purchase a sauna that has both.

This will be very convenient if the sauna will be part of your entertainment plans.

If your sauna will be nearby a pool, you can use it as a poolhouse.

In terms of the sauna heat source, you need to consider power sources.

For example, if electricity will be unavailable, you’ll need to have a wood sauna heater or gas heater instead of the more popular electric heater or infrared heaters.

Do you want the ability to have your sauna outside or inside?

You can purchase a pre-built modular sauna kit that can be set up in or outside your house.

If you really want to add something special to your experiences, try to plan your sauna placement with the course of the sun and the moon in mind.

If you position your sauna correctly, through a window you may be able to catch the sun light if you take a sauna during the day and watch the moon light in the evening.

Once everything is set up, an outdoor sauna could be your ‘escape’ without having to travel.

Installing A Steam Shower

Fortunately, you don’t have to tear up your bathroom or break the bank to build a steam shower, but

If you want to build your own steam shower or have one built for you, there are some important things that you will need to do.

Should you choose to accept it, your mission is to…

  • cover the roof of your shower enclosure
  • seal the enclosure with a special door
  • install a steam shower generator
  • optional: include something to sit on, like a folding or fixed bench or a tiled bench

If you decide to build a steam shower suite, which includes…

  • a shower,
  • steam jet, and
  • built in seating,

it would take up about the same amount of space as an average bathtub enclosure.

You can convert a small walk-in shower into a steam shower, but the enclosure may not turn out big enough to include a bench. That means you wouldn’t be able to relax during your steam shower. You would have to stand up the whole time.

Steam Shower Structure and Sealing

The structure

The walls and ceiling of your enclosure must be made of waterproof material such as tile, marble, granite, limestone or fiberglass.

Cover the roof

Many standard shower stall doors stop short of the ceiling by a foot or so. You’ll have to…

1) buy a lightweight acrylic dome top, or
2) install a cover made of a material like fiberglass or stainless steel.

Steam condenses, so the ceiling should be sloped or curved. If the shower ceiling is flat, condensed water will constantly drip.

Believe me, it’s not fun when a few of those drops hits you in the eye while you’re trying to relax and enjoy the moment.

Seal It

Your enclosure needs to be sealed very tight. If water vapor escapes, it will damage drywall, paint, or wallpaper.

You’ll also have to deal with rotting problems if steam is allowed to penetrate into your walls, ceiling and floor.

That wouldn’t be a good thing.

Home steam showers are meant for enjoyment, not ruining bathrooms.

You can’t have a vapor-tight enclosure without the right kind of door. Manufacturers sell steam shower doors in a variety of styles and colors.

Now, what about the steam?

If you want to build a steam shower, obviously you’re going to need something to produce the steam, right? So…

You’ll need to install a steam generator.

You might need a plumber and an electrician for this job. The generator needs to be connected to the water line and a 240V line voltage.

Deciding where to place your steam shower generator can potentially be one of your biggest design challenges.

Steam showers are growing in popularity because people really enjoy the soothing relaxation that they provide.

After all, it’s a great option to be able to come home after a busy day or a tough workout and unwind in your very own steam shower.

Terrence Banks has written about building a steam shower and buying a steam shower door.

Bertoia Beauty For Your Home

The prospect of decorating your home can be a daunting one. Often, you have an idea of the kind of style you desire, but you aren’t exactly sure how to put it into action.   For those who appreciate the look of modern furniture, a great place to start is with a bertoia chair or even the bertoia stool.

Harry Bertoia invented the bertoia chair, and he was one of the most legendary bertoia stool designers of the mid-century period. Bertoia was fond of metalwork, and created his signature chair, then called the “Diamond chair”, in the 1950’s.   Of this chair he said, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.” The chair’s look is achieved with molded lattice work of welded steel, part of a five piece collection from the Knoll company.

Bertoia was, in addition to being a furniture designer, but also a university lecturer and a sculptor.   This unique combination of talents probably had a big influence on his design thinking.  The integration of knowledge and design makes for stunning results.  By thinking creatively about the medium in which he was most comfortable – metal – Bertoia was able to completely re-imagine the concept of chairs, and revolutionize modern furniture.

The bertoia chair is a signature aspect of today’s modern furniture. Bertoia’s experimentation with the bending of metal rods produced a chair that also functioned as a piece of practical art. The modern furniture is simply another aspect of the beautiful design collection. The design is “classically modern” in that it appears perpetually modern, though originally conceived almost 60 years ago.   It is a fixture of mid-century design that remains popular to this day.

Modern furniture design is generally thougt of as clean, sophisticated, and simple. If you think that you would love the clean modern look, you can begin by integrating pieces into whatever you currently have in your room. Perhaps you should consider starting with one room, to keep the budget reasonable. Of course, even redesigning one room can put a big dent in your budget if you are not careful!   Try adding modern pieces one by one, keeping in mind your goals and your budget.   By starting with a simple, but eye-catching bertoia chair or bertoia stool, you can begin to overhaul the look you have now, and eventually add even more pieces to complete a fabulous new look.

How to Get the Right Steam Shower Design for Your New Dream Bathroom

When people begin to think of remodeling their home, often times, they’ll start with the bathroom. Why would they start with the bathroom, when there are so many other areas of the house to decorate and spruce up? The answer may be as simple as the fact that everyone has that idea of their dream bathroom. Part of this dream includes a steam shower design. Or, if it doesn’t, it definitely should, as a steam shower design can make the difference between just an ok bathroom and a fantastic bathroom.

Visit Your Local Home Improvement Store for ideas on the ultimate steam shower design for your bathroom, visit your local home improvement store or search the internet. Before you get started with tearing down walls, or any improvements for that matter, make sure you just get a good picture of what you would like your steam shower design to look like.

Your local home improvement center should have fixture ideas as well as other remodeling ideas for the rest of your house. However, if you’re just focused on a steam shower design, there are many to choose from.

he first thing you have to figure out is if you are looking for a shower or are you looking for more of a sauna type steam bath that comes with enclosures. It really all comes down to how much money you want to spend and which steam shower design you choose.

Once you have the steam shower design that you want in mind, the next thing you need to do is decide if you’re going to install it or if you’re going to pay someone to install it. If you’re going to install it yourself, it’s recommended that you only do this if you know exactly what you’re doing. If you do know what you’re doing, you can save a lot of money on labor costs. You will just have to buy the fixtures, the actual steam bath, the enclosures and everything else you may need.

Hire Someone And Have The job done right the first time. However, if you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s best to pay someone to do the job for you. That way, you can have the steam shower design you want and you won’t have to pay for a replacement later on because you didn’t quite know what you were doing. You may have to pay a little extra for someone else to do the work for you but you’ll end up better in the long run when you figure that the job will be done the right way.

Having a steam shower in your home is like having a sauna in your home, just like they have at your local gym. There’s no better way to relax, especially after a long, tiresome day. You can have one of your very own, you just have to choose the right steam shower design for you.

A Guide To Choosing the Right Closet

Closets are important fixtures in the house. Aside from containing and providing protection for clothes, toys, and food, the closet contributes significantly to the room’s ambience and design.

Before placing an order for a closet, here are some things that you need to consider.

* Size

The size of the closet depends on the size of the space in which the furniture will be placed. After considering the amount of space, also think about the amount of items that you will be placing inside the closet.

It is suggested that you place similar items in one closet than having several closets than contain the same items. This will provide ease in organizing the contents and in looking for things stored in the closet.

* Materials

While most closets are made of wood, the most important thing that you need to consider is the sturdiness of the materials used. Closets are almost permanent fixtures in the house. These cannot be easily replaced without going to a lot of trouble with the construction.

So make sure that the materials used can stand thru time until you decide to have the house renovated. Make sure that the wood has been pretreated to prevent mold and insect growth.

Also, make sure that the materials are suitable for what you intend to store in the closet. Some closets may not be good for storing food, so ask first before buying a closet or ordering one.

You can also purchase a closet in three ways. You can buy stock closets, which are ready-made that you can take it home on the same day. This is cheaper, however this provides you with little options.

You can order semi-custom closets. This would mean that the maker can give you samples of designs, parts and accessories, and you can select your own combinations.

Custom closets are the most expensive. If you choose a custom closet, you can specify the size and shape (for irregularly-shaped spaces) and design of your closet that you would like to order.

Also consider the drawer slides. These are rated according to load capacity as light, medium or heavy. It is better to choose slides that have full extension capability so can access the full depth of the drawers.

* Contents

Consider the amount of contents that will be stored in the closet. It will be better that you have a single closet for similar items for ease of storage and finding what you need.

Also, think about what type of items will be stored. Will you need additional drawers, attachments and racks for your closet? Make sure that you inform or ask the maker about this so he can give you suggestions and more information.

* Design

If you will be placing an order for a customized closet, you can choose exactly what you would like it to look like. Here are some considerations.

Finish – Apart from considering the latest trend, ask what will look good with your home. For a traditional style, brushed finishes, polished

nickel, pewter or brass will look great in your home’s interiors. For contemporary style, enameled and gloss-metal shine will match your home’s style.

Knobs and pulls – Knobs and pulls are mounted on drawers and doors to facilitate opening. Knobs are attached with a single bolt and screw and require less space than pulls, which are attached by two screws. Both can be combined with a backplate or can be used alone.

These are available in a variety of designs, colors and finish including sterling, antique or polished brass, aged bronze, iron, nickel, polished chrome, ceramics and antique copper.

Backplates – Backplates are placed on the knob or pull and the drawer or door surface. These are used to cover existing holes on the surface (usually when changing knobs or pulls), to protect the surface (during construction or when the knob is pulled) and to improve the design of the hardware.

* Budget

Ready-made closet are always the cheapest but make sure that these will fit your allotted space in your room. If you will be able to stretch your budget, it is still best to get a semi-custom or customized closet so you can specify the size and the design.

You can always check online for different offers on stock, semi-custom and custom closets. Surely, you can get one that will match your storage and decorating needs.

Things To Consider When Buying An Intercom

An intercom is an electronic communication system that is commonly found in hospitals, schools, offices and other large buildings, in ships and liners, and even in homes. With just a push of a button, an intercom system enables people in different rooms to communicate with each other in an instant.

The intercom is now becoming a popular component not only of workplaces but also of every household. Keep in mind that the right knowledge and proper caution is important, and the guidelines below will help you in finding the perfect intercom that best suits your needs.

1. Set your budget. The first important thing to do before shopping for an intercom system is to set your budget limit. The type, make, brand, and features of an intercom system will largely depend on the amount that you are willing to spend on it.

2. Know the basics. Different brands may have different systems, but their basic components are essentially the same. In general, an intercom has the following basic parts:

*The master station – also known as the central control panel, this is the unit that controls the system.

*The sub-stations/door stations – also known as the speakers or slave units, these are connected to the control panel.

*The power supply – this feeds power to all the units in order to make them function.

3. Determine the range that you want. Different intercom systems have varying ranges, with some even reaching almost 1,000 feet (or 304.8 meters).

Choosing the range of your intercom system depends on their use and purpose, which can vary from room to room, floor to floor, and even as far as from one building to another.

In general, intercoms are usually used for the following purposes:

*To connect different rooms.

*To connect rooms to a central office.

*To broadcast announcements/as a public address system.

*To function as a ‘bell’, especially at schools (to signal the change of classes) and at home (connected to a door buzzer).

4. Check its compatibility with your home (or building) structure. The ability of the intercom system to deliver a good sound quality depends on the structure of your home (or building). Obstacles, such as metal walls, may interfere with the signals and prevent your intercom system from producing a clear sound.

5. Choose the desired type of intercom system. Intercom systems can either be hard-wired or wireless.

*Hard-wired or traditional intercom systems – these require wires to connect the entire system that is installed throughout your home (or building). Although they provide minimum interference and/or restrictions, hard-wired intercoms can be expensive to install (even far more expensive than the actual cost of the units themselves). They can also prove to be less convenient, with all the wires running throughout the walls and ceilings.

*Wireless intercom systems – these units may be more costly than the traditional, hard-wired ones, but they have the advantage of requiring simple installation: just plug them to a power source, and you’re all set!

6. Determine the power supply to be used. Intercom systems can perform with either of the following power sources:

*An AC power outlet (or a 12 volts DC power supply)

*Batteries (needs regular replacement)

7. Check the product’s warranty. In a way, the length of an intercom’s warranty, including the extent of its coverage, reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in their particular product. Make sure that you understand the clauses and provisions that are stated in the warranty certificate, and that they are backed not only by the manufacturer but the local dealer (or dealers) as well.

8. Transact business with experienced dealers that are known for their reputation. They will not only provide you with several possible options but also actually help you in choosing the best intercom that would give the best value for your money. It is also strongly recommended that you deal with certified and accredited dealers and manufacturers that have been in business for a considerable length of time, who not only offer clear warranty considerations but also extensive after-sales support.

By following the guidelines that are mentioned above, shopping for a perfect intercom will surely be an easy task for you – allowing you to enjoy the many benefits of a good intercom system minus the worries and frustrations. Happy hunting!

Kitchen Faucet Buying tips

A durable and stylish kitchen faucet or bath faucet blends together function and aesthetics. The well made faucet makes life a lot easier. Excellent valve mechanism and more durable finishes boost longevity and looks.

Here are six steps in choosing the right faucet for you:

1. Two-handle designs, generally goes for as low as $50, allows you to regulate the temperature more accurately. Having independent control for the hot and cold water makes adjusting the temperature easier.

The single handle faucets also known as post-mount, generally goes for $75 to $200, operate from side-mounted lever or a top-mounted knob. Most single-handle faucets have pullout spouts.

The cross-shaped design and large wing levers are the more popular designs. However, most faucets have different handles that can be attached to a faucet body for a customized look.

2. If the style of the faucet is important, begin your choosing with the type of finish. The most affordable finish for a faucet is a chrome finish. Usually priced around $60. The chrome-finish has a long warranty on scratches.

The more colorful enamel coatings generally will cost you from $20 to $200 more, and are more susceptible to scratches and chipping. Add 25 to 40 percent more to the price of coated faucets for stainless steel faucets.

3. A PVD (physical vapor deposition) finish is better than usual plated finishes but add $150 to $750 more in costs. The PVD finish is done by vaporizing the metal and glazing it with a scratch-resistant and non-tarnishing film.

Look at brushed chrome, oil-rubbed bronze and satin nickel for a rustic appeal. The brushed finish and satin finish cleverly hides scratches.

4. There are more to spouts aside from the standard straight faucets. There are high-arching goose-like spouts, great for filling pots. A pull-out faucet can get you anywhere in a sink with three-bowls. You can go from a spray mode to a stream mode with a touch. There are also restaurant-type models for those extra long hoses.

5. Know that there are four kinds of faucets.

a. The compression valve:

The compression valve uses rubber washers. The compression valve type of faucet will eventually leak but they are typically easy to repair.

b. The ball valves:

The ball valve controls the flow and temperature of the water by using a steel ball. The ball valves are washerless and easy to maintain because of this. Replacing a ball valve is readily affordable and easy to do.

c. The ceramic disk

The ceramic disk is virtually a maintenance free water faucet. It is guaranteed not to wear out but is obviously much more expensive than the ball valve or compression valve.

d. The cartridge faucet

Much like the ceramic disk, the cartridge faucet usually does not need any maintenance. Just like the ceramic disk, it has a hefty price tag.

Regardless of the type of faucet you choose. Always check the warranty and the finish.

6. You may opt for filtering faucets, costing $200 plus, to bring in purified water. Several filters are placed under the sink while others are fitted inside the spout. To set the maximum water temperature, an anti-scald faucet can be used. An electronic faucet with an infrared sensor is also available. They save on water and allow for cleaner handles.

In general, you don’t need to hand over your hard earned money to pay for good quality. Most faucets have the same basic parts and sometimes even the same finish across several price lines.

To have a streamlined, urban look, choose a faucet that is mounted on the wall, this is often used with vanity bowls.

Be sure that your faucet connection matches your sink holes. If they don’t match, you’ll have to provide more drill holes or cover the unused holes using an escutcheon plate.

All faucets in general carry at least one year warranties. Even the low-end models carry at least one year of warranty. Many faucets carry a warranty by the manufacturer that is more than one year.

Good luck choosing the perfect faucet for you.

Pavements – Their Architectural Terms and Meaning

Pavements

From antiquity to modern times, pavements take many forms; from simple flags of native stone to vast ‘carpets’ of limestone, terracotta, marble or mosaic.

As early as the 4th Century BC, Egyptian temples had vast areas of stone flooring – conveying godly power and permanence. Early Christianity continued the tradition, paving basilicas and churches with floors laden with secret symbolism. Landmark buildings have always used stone pavements to impress and to provide a durable surface for the passage of feet.

Through colour and pattern, pavements have also carried messages to those equipped to read them. Egyptian architects, for instance, portrayed mystic energies using geometric black and white stone. We can trace the development of this idea through history… black and white floors became icons of locations as diverse as Europe’s great cathedrals, Flemish merchant houses and Masonic Halls. The meaning behind this and other designs is lost to many, but the aesthetics remain as vigorous as ever.

Pavements: Cosmati

A unique form of classical mosaic, Cosmati is extraordinarily decorative, with swirling bands of intricate stone and glass and gilded mosaic contrasted with highly polished white marble. Often used for pavements, Cosmati also decorates architectural elements such as walls and columns.

Inspired by Byzantine mosaic, Cosmati was a technique exclusive to three generations of the Cosma family, working in Rome from the 12th Century. Central to Romanesque architecture, fine examples of their work can be seen throughout Italy…but are concentrated in Rome where they had the patronage of the Pope.

Surprisingly though, London is home to two exceptional Cosmati floors. In 1269, the newly appointed Abbott of Westminster travelled to Rome and was dazzled by the richness of the mosaics. Returning to England, he commissioned workmen and materials from Italy to create Cosmati pavements for Westminster Abbey. The masterpiece is the ‘Great Pavement’ in front of the High Altar, completed in 1268.

Pavements: Opus-Sectile

Instead of being made up from small tesserae, Opus Sectile uses larger, specially-shaped elements in stone or tile. These are fitted together to create inlaid patterns or pictures on walls and floors.

Earliest examples of Opus Sectile work come from Ancient Egypt and Asia Minor. It reached an artistic height in Rome, from 4th- 6th Century, often used to create heroic images such as the chariot depicted in the basilica of the Roman Consul Junius Bassus..

Roman high fashion moved on and Opus Sectile moved East, becoming a feature of ornate Byzantine churches. It was not forgotten in Europe though, and by 12th Century, Opus Sectile techniques had become part of the vast repertoire of mosaic skills used by the Roman Cosmati family. Today, it is still practised by a very select few specialist craftsmen.
